As one of the stronger cell-to-cell adhesion types desmosomes allow cells to connect their intemediate filaments to those of neighboring cells. Therefore desmosomes can be found especially in cardiac muscle tissue, in bladder tissue and in epithelia, where the meachnical stress is quite high. As members of the cadherin super family, desmogleins and desmocollins thereby mediate adhesion at demosomes. Plakoglobin and the plakophilins on the other hand are members of the armadillo gene family and mediate the connection of the desmosome to desmoplakins that themselves mediate the connection to the cytoskeleton.
Mutations in these proteins or autoimmune reaction against them lead to severe diseases like arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, Hailey-Hailey disease or striate palmoplantar keratoderma.
Furthermore the tissue-specific expression of desmosomal proteins is critical to tissue homeostasis. Missexpression of single components of desmosomes can lead to hyperproliferation and abnormal differentiation.
The anti-desmocollin 1 & 3 sample set provides antibodies directed against desmocollin 1 and 3 to evaluate their presence and status in IHC and WB. The set contains enough antibody to perform stainings on 6-12 sections per antibody.
